Success Jar

Success Jar

Sometimes we are so busy looking at the bigger picture, our goals, and the end result, that we forget to stop and see just how far we have already come.  A great way to to remind yourself of where you’ve been and what you’ve accomplished is a Success Jar.  Simply stated, a Success Jar is a place to hold all your successes and accomplishments!  It is also a great way of fighting your fears and self-doubt.  A mentor of mine, Susan Mershon of the Techie Mentor, who teaches entrepreneurs how to build successful virtual assistant businesses, first introduced me to the Success Jar.

My Success Jar

To make a success jar, you can use any recycled jar such as a jam, syrup, or pickle jar.  I use an empty pretzel nugget container which works perfectly for me (and goes hand in hand with my addiction to pretzels!)  You can decorate it any way that you would like or you can simply label it “Success Jar”.  Place the jar somewhere visible in your office.  Now fill your jar with all your successes by writing each accomplishment down on a slip of paper and placing it in the jar.  I use different colored pieces of paper and write down each success as I accomplish it.

If you are just starting out in your business, daily accomplishments are a great idea.  At the end of the week, open your jar and read those successes.  If you are a more seasoned business owner, you still might want to jot down daily accomplishments.  Or you might want to make it a goal to write down at least one accomplishment per week.  You can open the jar at the end of the month.  Or another great method is to write down your weekly accomplishments and pick a date at the end of the year to open your success jar.  You can read your year’s worth of success and celebrate!  Weekly, monthly, yearly success celebrations…whatever way you decide works best for you is perfect!

Dee Bergschneider of Virtual Dee and I co-host a monthly webinar series for entrepreneurs.  For each series, we choose an inspirational quote.  For our winter series we chose “Life is not about finding yourself.  Life is about creating yourself.” by George Bernard Shaw.  Having a success jar is a part of that.  You are creating yourself and knowing you can be all that you want.  Keeping a success jar helps you to realize that each step, no matter how small you think it may be, is significant in heading you in that direction.
